Endodontic Post Op Care
FOLLOWING ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Your root canal treatment has been completed. The diseased or damaged tissue inside your tooth has been removed. The roots have been cleaned and disinfected prior to placement of the permanent root canal filling material. Due to the nature of the endodontics, your symptoms may increase before settling down.

MEDICATIONS

It is recommended you take the anti-inflammatory medication for the next two days even if you are not having any discomfort to help prevent an inflammatory flare up.  Sometimes inflammatory symptoms may develop two days post treatment. To control pain & inflammation take 600-800mg of ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc) every 6-8 hours  (max 2400 mg / 24 hrs) or 440 mg naproxen (Aleve) every 8-12 hours (max. 1100 mg / 24 hrs).

For moderate pain combine 500 mg Tylenol with the anti-inflammatory medication (max 2000 mg Tylenol / 24 hrs).

For severe pain, if a narcotic medication was prescribed, substitute it for the Tylenol while continuing to take the anti-inflammatory medication. Please do not take these narcotics while driving or operating any type of machinery!

FOLLOW UP WITH YOUR GENERAL DENTIST

If a temporary filling has been placed in your tooth you need to see your general dentist to have the tooth permanently restored. It is important to have this completed within the next 2-3 weeks.  If a final permanent restoration is postponed the root canal may require re-treatment at an additional cost to you.
